The Best VPN for Netflix Based on 255+ tests (October 2021 Updated)
As an avid Netflix user, I have always searched for the best VPN for Netflix to explore new titles and spend my weekends watching foreign Netflix all day long.
In the process, I often encountered various Netflix errors, a proxy error, Netflix site error, which often resulted in frustration.
All those years (and after conducting 255+ tests), I found out that not all VPNs work with Netflix even though they claim to do so. In this Netflix VPN guide, I’ll be sharing with you my years of experience and tell you the best VPNs for Australia that work consistently with Netflix
For each VPN service, I’ll unblock US Netflix content and share speed test results to give you an insight into which server you should use to access American Netflix in Australia.
10 Best VPNs That Works With Netflix (October 2021 Updated)
Based on all the 255+ tests I performed, the best VPN for Netflix at the moment is ExpressVPN. It helps unblock 20+ Netflix regions with its 3000+ servers. Moreover, you can connect to five devices at the same time and enjoy fast and stable UHD streaming.
Let’s take a look at my complete list of best VPNs for Netflix that still work in October 2021.
1. ExpressVPN (The best VPN for Netflix overall)
ExpressVPN is my first choice VPN for streaming foreign Netflix in Australia. It has 3,000+ servers in 94 countries, which allows you to unblock Netflix in almost any region of your choice. The Windows and Mac versions come equipped with a built-in speed test section that gives you a speed estimate for each server before even connecting to the big red N. This makes it easier for you to pick the best-optimized server.
If the speed is above 5 Mbps you can experience HD quality (720p or better), but if the speed is 25 Mbps you can experience Ultra HD quality (1080p or better).
When I tested for my internet speed, I found ExpressVPN incredibly fast. My internet speed barely got dropped while being connected to the Los Angeles-2 server.
I tried unblocking ‘The Long Dumb Road’ that is strictly US-only Netflix content and I was granted access with the first attempt.
ExpressVPN defeats Netflix throttling as well. Your ISP might throttle your speed when it sees the data packets. However, it hides your traffic in an encrypted tunnel so that it can never read your traffic.
If you find that ExpressVPN is not working with Netflix, the first thing you should do is turn OFF anti-viruses or firewalls you’ve been using. Further, update the ExpressVPN app if there’s a newer version, and then try again.
Just like I’ve unblocked the US Netflix library, you could try this for other libraries as well. For example, you can connect to ExpressVPN Netflix Japan servers to unveil all the Japanese Anime content.
The company offers 24-7 live chat support to help you out with all kinds of problems related to your connectivity with Netflix.
ExpressVPN works with all devices. And the best part is you can use it on 5 devices simultaneously.
Even though it’s a bit expensive at $6.67/month, it is completely worth the money. Plus, you can try it risk-free for 30-days.
2. Surfshark (Cheapest VPN for Netflix)
Surfshark is the cheapest VPN for Netflix. It unblocks 15 Netflix libraries, including American Netflix.
Most VPNs are able to unblock the US library but fail to access the UK library. However, Surfshark is able to achieve that as well thanks to its large server inventory, spread across 62 countries.
You can stream Netflix on an unlimited number of devices. It is simply one of the best VPNs for Netflix, providing fast and instant access to your desired Netflix library.
I usually connect to a server that isn’t overloaded with traffic. This time, I connected to a New York server and it helped me watch US Netflix content in Australia problem-free.
Another Surfshark Netflix server that easily got me access to its American library was Salt Lake City server.
If you face any problem with its connection or with Netflix not working with Surfshark, you can reach out to their 24/7 customer support team.
With all those features, Surfshark comes at an affordable price i.e. $2.49/month, and also with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
3. PureVPN (Smart VPN for Netflix)
PureVPN promises to unblock 7 Netflix libraries from countries like the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, and Japan.
All of these Netflix libraries combine to offer you a total of 4,335 Movies and 1,197 TV Shows.
There’s a special feature that I like about PureVPN when accessing streaming services such as Netflix. In its app, you will find a section such as ‘Popular Website’. Under this feature, you will find US Netflix, UK Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and other streaming services.
PureVPN doesn’t bother you by connecting to a relevant US server that might or might not work with Netflix. In fact, it would automatically connect you with the best Netflix server.
Plus, you don’t have to face buffering issues while watching HD or UHD shows because as I connected to its Netflix server, the speed was really fast and unmatchable.
Once I connected to the US Netflix server on the popular website section, I was able to watch ‘Norm of the North: Family Vacation’ which is only found in the American Netflix library.
PureVPN is not just a reliable option to watch Netflix from anywhere but is also an affordable one. It is available for $3.33/month with a 31-day money-back guarantee.
Most VPNs are good at hiding your traffic and your IP but are not optimized for streaming. But I found out that PureVPN can do both.
You can connect with PureVPN and then on Netflix using any device. PureVPN works on all devices i.e. Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, Smart TV, Android TV, Apple TV, and more.
It has a 24/7 live chat service to help you with all the technical problems you encounter.
4. NordVPN (Strongest Encrypted Netflix VPN)
NordVPN is without a doubt the strongest encrypted VPN that unblocks Netflix from anywhere. This is one of the best VPN for Netflix Australia that can help unblock 14 Netflix libraries.
It has fast speed too, but not as fast as the ones that are mentioned above NordVPN. I found NordVPN to be fast as it helped me stream Netflix content in UHD. Here is the speed test result:
I connected to American Netflix with one of NordVPN US servers i.e. Los Angeles #2,722 to watch ‘Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story’ and it worked perfectly.
The only drawback that I found while unblocking Netflix with NordVPN is its performance in NVIDIA Shield and Fire TV Stick device. NordVPN clearly mentions that it doesn’t unblock Netflix on these devices.
NordVPN works with Netflix on these devices i.e. Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux. With a single account, you can use Netflix on 6 devices simultaneously.
It has a NordVPN chatbot and live chat support in case you’re stuck with something and not been able to unblock Netflix.
If still, NordVPN won’t connect to any servers, you need to clear the browser cache along with history and then connect again. It will work!
CyberGhost easily beats the Netflix VPN ban with its most advanced servers. With any proxy error you receive on Netflix, CyberGhost can help you get rid of that as well.
To unblock Netflix or any other streaming service, it has a particular section called ‘For Streaming’ available on the left-side menu of its app. Once you click that, you will find servers that unblock Netflix, HBO(Previously HBO Now), Hulu, BBC iPlayer, YouTube TV, ESPN, and HBO Max in Australia.
This feature will save your time from connecting to different US servers until you are finally able to access Netflix. It will save time by connecting to the best Netflix server in the first attempt.
CyberGhost speed is remarkable too. I connected to the Netflix Japan server and found the speed to be great.
Other than Japan, there are other CyberGhost Netflix servers that help to unblock different Netflix libraries like the US, Australia, UK, France, and more.
For the Netflix test, I tried watching ‘The Dragon Prince’ which is strictly available in Japan library and I was easily given access to it.
CyberGhost has over 6,200 servers in 90 countries. If you encounter any problems streaming Netflix content, you can always check out its 24/7 live customer support service.
With a single CyberGhost account, you can connect with 7 devices simultaneously and watch Netflix. It costs $3.99/month with an impressive 45-day money-back guarantee.
IPVanish also makes our list of best Netflix VPN even though it doesn’t boast to unblock Netflix.
IPVanish VPN is a simple solution for your online privacy. It’s one of those VPNs that unblock Netflix without connecting to multiple servers.
It makes your connection private when you connect to its 1,300 servers. These servers also help you unblock Netflix with ease.
The speed of IPVanish is pretty decent as I found out by performing a speed test by connecting to its Phoenix server, the same server I used to access Netflix.
To check whether it works with US Netflix, I connected to a random US server i.e. Phoenix and it worked pretty well. I started streaming ‘The Runaways’ which is only available in the US.
It changes your IP address to that of a VPN server located in the US. Netflix then thinks that you’re in the US and grants you access.
IPVanish can be used to access Netflix on almost every device. But at the same time, you can connect to IPVanish on 10 devices simultaneously.
This VPN is available for $2.62/month and with a 30-day money-back guarantee. You can debate on whether it is too expensive for the likes of the feature it offers, but it definitely helps you access Netflix from anywhere.
Private Internet Access is a truly private VPN that is both reliable and trustworthy when it comes to unblocking Netflix.
When tested, it was able to unblock 3 Netflix libraries i.e. US, Japan, and Germany. Even though I tried multiple attempts and connected different servers, it worked out eventually.
The speed was great too. I was able to stream UHD content on Netflix without a problem. Here is the speed test when I was connected to the New York server.
While connected to the New Jersey server, I was able to watch the US-only Netflix show ‘The Legend of Korra’…
PIA VPN uses the strongest AES-256 bit encryption like other VPNs mentioned in the list, so it easily hides your internet traffic from ISPs. Hence, the ISPs never know if you’re trying to access Netflix or viewing any other website.
The reason why I got fast speed was due to its WireGuard protocol. It is faster than the IKEv2 protocol and more secure than the OpenVPN protocol.
Everyone in the family can enjoy streaming Netflix with PIA VPN turned ON because it supports 10 multiple devices simultaneously.
It is not so expensive either. You can get PIA VPN for $2.69/month having a 30-day refund policy.
Windscribe when using it for Netflix purposes is often referred to as ‘Windflix’. So, its Windflix servers were easily able to unblock Netflix in a few attempts.
When tested, I was able to unblock only 2 Netflix libraries i.e. US and UK. I tried using its free version that had only 23 servers in 10 locations but didn’t have any Windflix servers until I managed to purchase and run the test.
The speed was great as I was able to stream without any buffering problems whatsoever. Here is a screenshot of its speed test when I connected to its US Windflix server:
Here is the screenshot of the video of me watching ‘Casino Royale’ on Netflix which is a US-only movie:
If you’re watching Netflix with Windscribe, you’ll be taking your browsing history to the grave because it protects your browsing history from your network administrator, ISP, or even your own family.
Windscribe offers a dedicated app for all devices and platforms so it easily fulfills our criteria for choosing the best Netflix VPN as well.
You can try its most popular pricing option at $4.08/month if you want to access Netflix, but if you only want to access the web privately you can try its free version.
VyprVPN is also a good option for unblocking Netflix and helping you bypass Netflix geo-restrictions that prevent you from watching exclusive content.
When tested, I was able to unblock 4 Netflix libraries i.e. Canada, Germany, US, and the UK only. It took me a few attempts to access Canada Netflix but I managed to do it in the end. The speed was exceptionally fast too. I connected to its Vancouver server and here’s the screenshot of the speed test:
I was able to stream Canada-only Netflix content ‘Mansfield Park’ with ease:
VyprVPN successfully manages to safeguard your internet privacy while you stream your favorite content on Netflix. It is one of the few VPNs that have independently audited its logs and is certified as ‘No-Logs VPN’.
It connects up to 5 devices at the same time and works splendidly well for all platforms and devices.
Its most popular pricing option is its 2-year plan that costs $2.50/month and is fully refundable for 30 days.
PrivateVPN unblocks everything whether it be Netflix or other streaming services. You can safely access over 5,480 titles with ease.
When tested, I was able to access 7 Netflix libraries i.e. US, UK, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Australia, and Sweden. I was amazed at how fast PrivateVPN was when I connected to its US server. Have a look at the speed test:
Once I connected to the US server, I was able to stream ‘Family Guy’ which is a US-only Netflix show. Here’s the screenshot:
PrivateVPN has military-grade encryption that shields you from governments and hackers whenever you try to access the web or try watching something on Netflix.
It works on all devices and platforms except for Chromecast and Apple TV. In order to work on these devices, you will need to connect to a VPN-enabled router.
It is not so expensive yet not so affordable too. It is available for $3.82/month and it gives your 30-days money-back guarantee.

Criteria for Choosing the Best Netflix VPN
We made ExpressVPN our top recommended VPN based on the criteria that I will be sharing with you. With hundreds of VPNs claiming to unblock Netflix, I decided to lay down some procedure or set of tests where no player would be able to object to the rankings.
We performed many tests to spare you the burden of checking each VPN if they unblock Netflix. Here is list of criteria to choose the best VPN that works with Netflix:
Ability to Unblock US Netflix (among other regions)
The first most important thing which is why we’re all here is to unblock US Netflix. If a VPN doesn’t do that this means it has no claim to unblocking Netflix.
But we went one step ahead. We checked if a VPN has the potential to access American Netflix among one other Netflix region (e.g. Japan, Germany, France, etc.)
Fast Speed without any Buffering Issues
Of course, there’s no streaming experience without a decent speed and we have acknowledged that while selecting a VPN for Netflix.
We followed a basic streaming requirement outlined by Netflix itself. These are:
- 0.5 Mbps per second – Required broadband connection speed
- 1.5 Mbps per second – Recommended speed
- 3.0 Mbps per second – Recommended for SD quality
- 5.0 Mbps per second – Recommended for HD quality
- 25 Mbps per second – Recommended for UHD
We followed the criteria for UHD which is the highest streaming speed requirement for Netflix. Any VPN that falls under this criteria means that their speed is highly commendable.
Apps for All Devices (preferably desktop and mobile)
As you may all know, Netflix can be watched on multiple devices. Therefore, we set criteria where a VPN must support all devices and platforms.
Among those devices, desktop and mobile is a must. Not only that, but these VPNs must also have the capability to unblock Netflix on all of those devices.
24/7 Chat Support
It’s common knowledge that if you don’t have the technical knowledge, you will need assistance or support to make a VPN work with Netflix.
For that, a VPN must have 24/7 customer support if not live chat support. Most VPNs do not indicate which VPN server would work with Netflix so you’ve got to identify yourself through trial and error. It’s better to ask customer support if our suggested server does not work.
How to use a VPN with Netflix?
Step 1: Choose a good Netflix VPN
The following are the best VPNs that work with Netflix. Subscribe to any one of these VPNs:
Step 2: Download and Install VPN apps
All VPNs have dedicated apps for your preferred device. You can download and install them from their website once you subscribe to their service.
For instance, ExpressVPN has a VPN app for all devices and operating systems such as Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Fire TV Stick, Smart TV, and more.
Step 3: Connect to the US server
Once the app is downloaded, it would require you to enter your username, password, and the activation code to log in. Inside the app, click on the Locations tab and search for the country United States to access the US Netflix library. Select a server.
You can use the Los Angeles-2 server because that server worked for me.
Step 4: Start Streaming Netflix from Abroad
Open Incognito mode of your web browser and log in to the Netflix website and your account. You will be considered just another user American user who is trying to access Netflix.
Search for any content that is strictly available in the US (e.g. The Clique). Start streaming!
Why Netflix has Regional Restrictions?
The reason why there is a regional restriction in the Netflix library that varies from one country to another is because of copyright law.
The licensing agreement between Netflix and Movie Studios doesn’t allow Netflix to let everyone watch everything.
These Movie Studios have different contracts in different countries. That is why you will find some titles in one country but unavailable in another.
That said, it’s not like Netflix is being cruel or anything but this is the geographical licensing agreement that Netflix has to oblige.
Some countries may have the right to show a particular content but others don’t. Avengers: End Game or any other Avengers Movie is restricted to the US Netflix library and a few other libraries only.
You won’t find the content even by searching it on the search bar let alone streaming it.
There’s no surprise that the American Netflix library has the most content because most of the Movies and TV Shows are coming out of the United States.
In fact, the US library has 1,000+ more shows than the UK library. It’s great if you’re in the US, but not so great if you’re in the UK.
That is why a VPN is used to change your IP address and assign yourself a US IP address so that you get access to tons of movies and TV shows from the US Netflix library that was otherwise impossible.
Why Does Netflix Block Most VPNs?
Since Netflix has made a licensing agreement with copyright owners, they have to abide by that agreement and hold true to their statement.
For that matter, it wouldn’t allow anyone whether it be VPNs or Proxy to access geographical licensing restrictions. At least, not openly.
Rightly so, Netflix views VPNs as a threat to the licensing agreement and it takes every precautionary measure to block VPNs.
Even though Netflix doesn’t want to breach the agreement, but it still does not distinguish between users’ who are living in one country and those users’ who are just visiting another country.
It also doesn’t distinguish between users’ who want to use VPN for their privacy and protection.
Netflix only has problems with VPNs, Netflix does not ban VPN users even though it knows they are trying to access something that is not recommended.
Is it Legal to Use a VPN with Netflix?
Using a VPN with Netflix is completely legal. Even though Netflix won’t like it, but there is no such law that prohibits anyone from using a VPN to bypass geographical restrictions.
In fact, only less than 10 countries in the entire world consider the use of a VPN against the law. These countries include Iraq, Belarus, Turkmenistan, North Korea, and Oman.
Netflix VPN bans are only imposed so that Netflix doesn’t breach the licensing agreement made between copyright owners.
Despite the fact that Netflix and VPNs don’t normally have a good relation, Netflix realizes that VPNs are also used to protect your online security and so they can’t help it but ban VPNs.
Should You Use Smart DNS Proxy to unblock Netflix?
No, you shouldn’t use proxies to access Netflix. A few years ago, Smart DNS Proxies like Unlocator, Overplay, Unotelly, and Unblock-US were a big hype. These proxies used to unblock Netflix with ease just by changing your IP location.
In fact, at that time, even completely free VPNs were capable enough to overpower Netflix’s fragile geo-fences. However, Netflix came under pressure from major content producers and upped its location tracking technology, banning proxies and low-grade VPNs altogether.
Even big VPN companies have a tough time unblocking Netflix because once Netflix detects an IP address that belongs to a VPN, it blocklists that IP. So the good VPNs are constantly looking for new IP addresses to avoid a ban.
How to Resolve Netflix Proxy Error?
Even when you try to use a VPN of your choice, you continuously face Netflix proxy error. It clearly says:
“Whoops, something went wrong…Proxy Detected. You seem to be using an unblocked or proxy. Turn off these services and try again.”
Here are some solutions that will help you resolve this problem and eventually unblock US Netflix proxy error:
- Use only those VPNs that I have mentioned in this list whenever you stream Netflix
- If you are using a web browser, clear the browser cache
- Just don’t rely on a single VPN server. If you’re trying to watch US Netflix, try connecting to different US servers until it unblocks the service
That’s pretty much the secret to resolving Netflix proxy errors. Always use good VPNs like the ones I mention and connect to the right VPN server.
Summing it Up
A VPN with the USA IP will add an additional list of Movies and TV Shows that you would want to stream wherever you are located.
A Netflix VPN will help you to:
- Access Netflix from anywhere in the world
- Watch different Netflix library i.e. US, UK, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, India, and a lot more
- Access a larger selection of Movie and TV Shows titles
- Encrypts your internet traffic so that your ISP or Netflix doesn’t know you are bypassing regional restrictions.
Netflix and VPNs will play continue to chase each other until Netflix announces to make the same content available throughout every Netflix library. We all know that is too difficult a task to achieve.
If that’s not happening, then Netflix will be trying every other possibility to ban VPNs from the first chance they get. Similarly, these VPNs will change their approach accordingly to unblock the streaming service.
Having said that, we will be updating the list to bring you the best VPN for Netflix that works with Netflix. Stay tuned!
